I love amusement parks and festivals.
I will never grow out of riding the rides.
My all time favorite ride is the Eli Bridge ScRaMbLeR !!
This is an original 1955
Eli Bridge ScRaMbLeR ground
set model. The Eli Bridge Co. a bridge
fabrication company. They diversified
and created a few awesome carnival
rides. The Eli Wheel and the Eli
ScRaMbLeR.
Both rides once the staple of every
carnival midway. You would find one of
each at every show. As common as a
Carousel, no show is complete
without all of these.
Another ground set model,
by the 1960’s the look of the ride
was like this photo at left. The cars
were stainless steel with the wing
decals. A classic look and my
favorite look for the ride.
By the late 1970’s to the
present the rides were trailer
mounted for easy transport and
set-up. They seemed to run a
bit smoother as well. I know
as I have been on many
of these rides.
At right one of the trailer
mounted Scramblers. This one
themed with colors. The console,
control and operater sat at the
head on the trailer. The set-up
was much easier this way.
Just pull the wheels off and
set the trailer level. Fold out the
swing arms, insert the bolts and
pins then attach the cars.
This one looks to be
mid 1980’s judging by the
lighting package.
This model is a park set model with the
operator’s doghouse. These are usually
built in to the park. All surfaces are flush
to the pavement, nice clean installation.
I have never gotten sick on one of
these. Just an awesome ride every time!
KMG makes a competitor version called
the Sizzler, also a great ride. Sizzlers
have a platform and doghouse.
Another favorite of mine are the Dark Rides and Ghost Trains.
These days the Dark Rides basically suck. They totally lack any creativity or
investment. All of the effort is placed on the outside flash of the rides to bring
your attention to the ride. Once inside prepare for disappointment. All you get
are annoying loud Buzzers and Sirens and maybe a few flashing lights.
They totally lack any creativity what so ever. No theme or story line.
Please visit my friends at LAFF in the DARK to see the good stuff, not this
crap they have today. I am amazed what amusement operators pay for a Dark
Ride these days. They are all flsah on the outside, a waste of good hard
earned money. If I was an operator i would buy an old one, gut it out
and do my own thing with it. Probably save a huge chunk of
money and get a top end product when completed.
By far one of the best Dark Rides ever was the
HOUSE OF HORRORS at Rocky Point Park, Warwick,
Rhode Island. A Bill Tracy Masterpiece from back in the
day. Originally named the CASTLE OF TERROR, this
ride was awesome. One of the best effects is the
unexpected LOUD CRASH you hear as your
car crashes through the plywood doors.
Just look at the facade, they don’t make
anything like this anymore. In fact the ride
was built in the 1960’s and was one of the last
buildings standing long after the park was
closed. A testiment to quality.
